# Custom fields

> Capture workspace-specific information on contacts, conversations, and messages.

Custom fields let you store information that is specific to your workflow without changing Zorvia's standard fields. A workspace administrator creates each field once and chooses whether it applies to contacts, conversations, messages, or a combination of them.

## Create a custom field

1. In Zorvia, open **Settings → Custom Fields**.
2. Select **Add Custom Field**.
3. Enter a field name and, optionally, a description.
4. Choose a field type.
5. Under **Use this field for**, select one or more resources: **Contacts**, **Conversations**, or **Messages**.
6. Choose whether the field is required and visible by default for each selected resource.
7. Select **Create field**.

You need permission to manage workspace settings to create, edit, or archive custom fields.

## Find available fields

The Zorvia dashboard is the source of truth for the custom fields available in a workspace. Open **Settings → Custom Fields** to view them.

For each field, the table shows:

* **Name** — the field's display name and generated placeholder;
* **Type** — the kind of value the field accepts;
* **Used by** — whether the field applies to contacts, conversations, messages, or more than one resource; and
* **Required** — the resources for which a value is required.

A field is eligible for a resource only when that resource appears under **Used by**. For example, a field showing **Contacts, Conversations** can be added to contacts and conversations, but not to individual messages.

If you cannot view workspace settings, ask a workspace administrator to confirm the field and its eligible resources.

## Choose a field type

| Type | Use it for |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| Text | Short values such as an account ID. |
| Long text | Notes or other multi-line information. |
| Number | Numeric values such as a score. |
| Yes / No | A true-or-false choice. |
| Date | A calendar date. |
| Single select | One value from a predefined list. |
| Multiple select | One or more values from a predefined list. |

Single-select and multiple-select fields require at least one option. Use stable option names when the values will also be used in reports or message templates.

## Add values

Where you enter a value depends on the field's assignments:

* **Contact fields** appear when creating or editing a contact and can be mapped during contact import.
* **Conversation fields** appear in the conversation details panel.
* **Message fields** are available from an individual message's custom-fields action.

A field configured as required must have a value when that resource is created or updated through a supported Zorvia form.

## Use contact fields in templates

Contact custom fields are available as predefined template variables. Insert the variable offered by Zorvia's template editor rather than typing its generated placeholder manually. Zorvia resolves the variable from the recipient contact when the template is sent.

## Edit or archive a field

Open **Settings → Custom Fields**, then use the edit or archive action beside the field.

Changing a field updates where it appears for future work. A field's type cannot be changed after values have been saved. Archiving removes it from new entries while retaining existing values.
